Aarhus
The city in the Midtjylland region bore the title of European Capital of Culture in 2017. And not without reason. The largest concert hall in Scandinavia, the "Musikhuset Aarhus" alone justifies this award. But there is not only this superlative to explore. There is also the largest library in Scandinavia, with an area of 30,000 square meters. In addition to these two extraordinary buildings, the largest training and research institution for journalism, "Journalisthøjskolen" has its headquarters in the university town, which is populated with 200,000 inhabitants. Greenhouse lovers will be in their element in Aarhus, as a botanical garden with plant collections from four different climatic zones is worth exploring. It is worth mentioning that Aarhus - like many Danish cities - has been designated a bicycle city. Bicycles can be rented for a few euros and you can use them to easily reach any point of the city on the specially created bike lanes. The city itself was founded by Vikings who settled here in the area of the Aahrhus A river. Controversially, a few years ago, the city councils discussed changing the classic name of Aarhus to the internationally more spellable Aarhus. Thus, it is now allowed in Denmark to use both spellings. Last but not least, also for Aarhus the reference to the castle. Marselisborg Castle is located in the southwest of the city and is the residence of the royal family in the summer. Why of all people the inhabitants of Aarhus have taken the victim role in the matter of wit, is not handed down. Like the East Frisians with us, the Aarhusians have to endure a multitude of jokes.
