Baden bei Wien

Travel Guide & Travel Information
The Austrian city of Baden is usually referred to as "Baden bei Wien" due to its confusion with other cities. With just under 26,000 inhabitants, it is one of the largest cities in the province of Lower Austria. Locals often refer to Baden as the imperial city. The city can be easily reached from downtown Vienna with the Badner Bahn train.

Where to go first in Baden?

The terminus of the Badner Bahn is at Josefsplatz. From there, we recommend a walk through the spa and imperial city. The first place to go is the main square, where the plague column built in 1713 rises into the sky as a reminder of the terrible disease.

Right next to it in Pfarrgasse is the so-called Lumpentürl (Rascal Door), a small passageway in the city wall, which in earlier times was mainly used by criminals (the so-called ragamuffins).

The path continues into the Kurpark, which was opened in 1792 and immediately takes its visitors back to the Biedermeier era with its numerous monuments. One of them is the Beethoven Temple, which offers a wonderful view over the city and the entire thermal region.

Which museums are recommended?

The Arnulf Rainer Museum is located in the former "Frauenbad", built in 1821. After the baths ceased operation in 1973, it now serves as a museum and is dedicated to the works of the Austrian painter Arnulf Rainer, who was born here in the city.

The Beethoven House is the composer's former home, where he spent most of his summers over a period of 15 years, composing large parts of his famous Ninth Symphony, among other things. Since 2013, it has been home to a contemporary presentation of Ludwig van Beethoven and his music.

What is in the immediate vicinity?

If you would like to get to know Baden and the surrounding area better, you can do so on a guided bike tour. The tour lasts around 2.5 hours and costs 28 euros per person.

However, it is also worthwhile to set out on foot or by bike yourself and explore the beautiful and varied landscape of the Vienna Woods. For culture enthusiasts, the "Wegerl durchs Helenental" (path through the Helenental valley), which connects the city of Baden with the Heiligenkreuz monastery, is a particularly good choice.

Baden spa center

In Baden there are 14 natural sulfur thermal springs, from which 4 million liters of natural sulfur thermal water with 32 to 36 degrees Celsius bubble up every day. Of course, the people of Baden do not let this water simply seep away, but use it for various healing treatments in the Baden spa center in the middle of the old town and other recreational facilities.

In addition to traditional physical therapies, modern and forward-looking treatment methods are also used. For vacationers, the Römertherme (Roman Baths) is a particular attraction, housing an impressive sauna and bathing landscape under the largest free-hanging glass roof in Europe.
