The Brandenburg Gate, built between 1788 and 1793 on the orders of the Prussian King Frederick William II, according to designs by Carl Gotthard Langhans, is undisputedly the city's landmark. Above all, the golden quadriga created by Johann Gottfried Schadow above the historic Triumph Gate is known throughout the world. In front of it lies the stylishly laid out Pariser Platz with the historic Hotel Adlon, the Academy of Arts and other important buildings of the city of Berlin. After the construction of the Berlin Wall on August 13, 1961, the Brandenburg Gate became the symbol of the border demarcation between East and West Berlin.
