If you're looking for an original souvenir or just like to browse a bit, Camden Market is the place to be. The market attracts countless visitors week after week and is one of the most visited places in the city.

Junk, bric-a-brac and kitsch

The market around Camden High Street and Chalk Farm Road is divided into six different areas. The varied market stalls are partly in covered halls, partly in the open air. The halls of Camden Lock Market on Regent's Canal were once used as warehouses for shipping. When there was no more use for the halls, they were temporarily used as a market place. In the meantime, the market stalls have become firmly established and after a fire in 2008, the destroyed parts were rebuilt.

To the north of Camden High Street is the Stables Market. If you are looking for the latest fashion trends, this is the place to be. Flashy clothes, fancy jewellery or trendy leather jackets, if you shop here, you are in line with the trend. Unique pieces of furniture are also on offer. In 2007, several large chains also wanted to settle in the area. The project was stopped by protests of the residents.

Especially on weekends Camden Market is very crowded, but especially on these days you can feel the special flair of the place best. For the small hunger in between, there are numerous food stands or small restaurants of any taste available. Foreign delicacies are offered as well as the typical English fish and chips. Shortly before the market closes, prices are reduced at many stalls.

The history of Camden

The district Camden, located in the north of London, has attracted many students, actors and other creative people due to its still comparatively cheap rents, so that a specially modern scene could develop here. In earlier years, Camden High Street served primarily as a connecting route to Hampstead, and the first shops did not settle here until around 1950. In the 1980s an arts and crafts scene developed in the old ship warehouses and markets first appeared. Over time, interest in the stalls grew and more and more visitors arrived.
