The climb through the park to the Colline du Château is worthwhile, because from the terrace Frédéric Nietzsche offers a magnificent view.

The most beautiful view of Nizza

On the 90 metres high Colline du Château, the Greeks and the Romans already settled in former times. Witnesses of this time are still some ruins of a former fortress and a former cathedral. Thus, those who climb the castle hill and expect a gorgeous castle due to the name will be disappointed. But the unique view more than makes up for this fact. It is recommended to climb up the hill via the Rue Rosetti and the Place Garibaldi. Artificial waterfalls and a beautiful green area with cacti and palm trees line the way. Visitors also pass the ruins of the old St. Réparate Cathedral, which was not used for long, on their ascent. As life moved more into the city, a new cathedral was built in the old town of Nice.

There are very few remains of the former castle on the castle hill. Louis XIV conquered the fortress in 1706 in the war against Savoy. After his conquest, he let grind the fortress very thoroughly, so that today, only some ruins remind on the former citadel.

Above the roofs of Nizza

The most beautiful view is offered from the terrace Frédéric Nietzsche. The terrace was named after the German philosopher Nietzsche, who liked to walk here. Visitors are presented with a unique view of the Bay of Angels, the Baie des Anges with the harbour, the beach and the skyline of the city. In the background, the rugged cliffs of the Alps can be seen.

If you are looking for a comfortable descent after the ascent, you can leave the mountain by a lift near the Tour Bellanda and get to the Quai des Etats-Unis. The Tour Bellanda offers an impressive view, as the monument was practically built into the mountain in the year 1825. Here is also the Musée Naval, the maritime museum of the city.
