Istanbul, once Byzantium and Constantinople, is rich in historic Christian religious buildings. The most famous is the Hagia Sophia, originally an Orthodox cathedral, which was later converted into a mosque and museum. Another highlight is the Chora Church with its impressive Byzantine mosaics and frescoes. There are also numerous other churches of various Christian traditions in the city, reflecting Istanbul's rich history and culture.
The Hagia Sofia is an important sacred building with an eventful history. A visit to the museum is a must in Istanbul.
The Chora Church in Istanbul dates back to the 14th century and is one of the most beautiful testimonies of Byzantine art. Not only in the incomparably more famous Hagia Sophia, but also here have been preserved magnificent mosaics that shimmer unearthly golden.
It is one of the main Catholic churches in the city of Istanbul and has been visited by four popes in the last forty years. Reason enough to visit the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit during a trip to Istanbul.
