India has a population of 1.4 billion, of which almost 150 million live in the country's 10 largest cities. The top place in terms of population is occupied by Delhi with 32 million inhabitants, followed by Mumbai and Calcutta. Due to the size of the country, however, there are no regular estimates of population figures. As economic engines and centers of power, India's cities are becoming increasingly important, which is why an unrelenting influx of new residents is causing the metropolises to grow steadily. Indian cities combine stark contrasts of poverty and wealth and the pursuit of material but also spiritual happiness. Historic buildings, traditional markets and pilgrimage sites captivate both residents and tourists and sometimes create overwhelming impressions.
