The Klara Church (Swedish: Klara kyrka or Sankta Klara kyrka) is located near the main railway station in the Norrmalm district. The church, built in the 16th century of red bricks, is with its 116 m high steeple the second highest church in Scandinavia (after the cathedral in Uppsala) and the fifth highest building in Sweden.
History of the church
The Gothic Church of the Holy Cross was built by the Swedish King John III in the years 1575-90. In the Middle Ages, the monastery of St. Clare stood on the same site, but it was demolished in 1527 in the course of the Reformation.
The grave of the poet Carl Michael Bellmann is also located in the church cemetery.
