The Roman Colosseum is one of the most famous sights in Rome and is located in the immediate vicinity of the Roman Forum. Even though the Colosseum in its current form is unfortunately only preserved in parts, visitors can imagine themselves in the original use as a gladiator arena. The visit of the Roman Colosseum is especially recommendable after the Roman Forum. From the Roman Forum, the southern exit leads directly to the Colosseum.

Landmark of Rome

The Colosseum is the landmark of the city of Rome. Built between 72 and 80 AD, it is almost as old as our era. Once the elliptical building was called Amphitheatrum Flavium. It was not until the 8th century that the name Colosseum was used, which goes back to a huge statue of Nero that the emperor had erected near the amphitheatre.

In the largest amphitheatre in the world, cruel gladiator fights were held in ancient times. It was opened in 80 A.D. by Emperor Titus with games that lasted 100 days and featured "bread and games" as well as re-enacted sea battles or animal fights. The Colosseum had room for 50.000 people, by a perfect system of stairs and corridors every spectator could easily reach his place. The arena of that time even had a sun roof. A kind of tent roof could be stretched from the top floor to protect the spectators from the sun. The arena was used for a total of 400 years.

In the following time the Colosseum was abused as a quarry. St. Peter's Basilica was built in part with stones from the Colosseum. Although the ancient structure has survived various fires and earthquakes, it is still well preserved.

Visitors can enjoy an impressive view of the gigantic structure, especially from the north side. On this side, the 49-meter high facade with its four floors is almost completely preserved.

The landmark of Rome is open daily from 9 am until one hour before sunset. The building can be reached via the metro station "Colosseo" or via various tram and bus lines. The entrance fee is 16,50 Euro and includes the visit of the Forum Romanum and the Palatine. (as of 09/2011)
