Once upon a time, what is now American Samoa was a refuge for the defeated warriors and chiefs of the neighboring Somali islands. The country is the largest American territory south of the equator. The capital, Tutuila, originated on a volcanic island. However, the fire vents of these volcanoes have long since gone out. Some islands of the archipelago are connected by bridges, but as a rule, vacationers in American Samoa use the boat transport. On the island of Ta'u, in a national park, is the sacred site of Saua, which the Polynesians consider the nucleus of their existence. Some beaches are under the protection of the authorities and may not be entered for religious reasons.
