Brazil is the largest country in South America, covering almost half of the continent. It borders almost all other South American countries and the Atlantic Ocean. Brazil was discovered by the Portuguese in 1500 and was a Portuguese colony until 1822. After that it was a monarchy until it became a republic in 1889. The country has a rich culture shaped by indigenous people, Portuguese immigrants, African slaves and many other influences. Brazil is known for its vibrant music scene, beaches, rainforests, soccer enthusiasm and carnival. Among the most famous sights are the city of Rio de Janeiro with its landmark Cristo Redentor, the Iguazú waterfalls, the Amazon rainforest and the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema.
