Lacking water and fertile soil, Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world and suffers from climate change to a particular degree. People in this part of West Africa repeatedly complain of droughts and thus crop failures, and the livelihoods of countless small farmers in this landlocked country are threatened. The country name Burkina Faso translates as "land of upright people." Somehow it is a contradiction that the most important film festival in Africa is taking place in this famine-stricken country of all places. And this despite the fact that there are just twelve cinemas in Burkina Faso. Every two years, the capital Ouagadougou hosts this event. The metropolis, with a name that is difficult for German tongues to pronounce, was for centuries the center of the feudalistically structured Mosi empire with a god-king and 333 vassals. Moro Naba, the regent of the Mosi, is still revered by his followers in Burkina Faso. A weekly ceremony in traditional robes takes place in his palace in Ouagadougou.
