Cambodia is a country in Southeast Asia, located between Thailand, Laos and Vietnam on the Gulf of Thailand. The history of the country dates back to the Kingdom of Kambuja, which had its heyday from the 9th to the 15th century. Later, the country came under French rule and was part of French Indochina. After years of civil war and the Khmer Rouge reign of terror, the country has made great strides in fighting poverty and underdevelopment since 1993 and is now one of the fastest growing economies in Asia. Among the country's most important sights are the temple complexes of Angkor, which have been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
