The Republic of Cyprus is an island republic in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. The island has been influenced by various cultures and states, including Greece, the Ottoman Empire and Great Britain. The Republic of Cyprus gained its independence from Britain in 1960, but was occupied by Turkey in 1974. Since then, the island has been divided: The internationally unrecognized Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus exists in the north. The Greek-speaking Republic of Cyprus has been a member of the European Union since 2004 and uses the euro as its currency. The island is known for its beautiful beaches, historical sites and traditional villages such as Lefkara, which is famous for its handmade lace. Other attractions include the Roman mosaics in Paphos and the ancient ruins of Kourion.
