The Democratic Republic of Congo, formerly known as Zaire, is located in Central Africa and borders the Atlantic Ocean. It is the second largest state in Africa and has great ethnic and linguistic diversity. The country's history is marked by long Belgian colonial rule, political conflicts and civil wars. Although the country is rich in natural resources, today it is one of the poorest countries in the world. Sights include the Virunga National Park with its mountain gorillas, the Kivu Lakes and the Congo Waterfalls.
