Ecuador is a country in the northwest of South America. In terms of landscape, the country is divided into three worlds: The icy peaks of the Andes, an almost impenetrable rainforest and finally the charming coastline on the Pacific Ocean. The country derives its name from the invisible belt that covers this and other regions. We are talking about the equator, the largest of all latitudes. Ecuador is divided into three quite different zones. There is the "Costa", the lowland on the shores of the Pacific Ocean. It narrows from the Gulf of Guayaquil and is crossed by a mountain range that reaches heights of up to seven hundred meters. The Sierra is the heart of the country, and it is the Andes that determine life and landscape here. Even in pre-colonial times, this was the main area of human settlement in Ecuador. There remain the slopes of the eastern Cordilleras, which slope down to the basin of the Amazon and are called "Oriente". Ecuador has many faces - and almost all of them are worth a trip.
