Eritrea is located in northeast Africa and borders Sudan, Ethiopia, Djibouti and the Red Sea. Eritrea's history dates back to ancient times and includes the rule of various powers such as the Aksumite Empire and the Ethiopian emperors, as well as colonial rule by Italy and Great Britain. In 1993, the country became independent. Among the most famous sights are the historic city of Asmara with its Italian colonial architecture, the archaeological sites of the Aksumite Empire and the landscapes of the highlands and the Red Sea.
