The Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) is an island nation in Oceania consisting of four states: Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae. They are located in the western Pacific Ocean, northeast of Indonesia and south of Guam. The FSM were formerly part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands under U.S. administration, but gained independence in 1986. Characteristic of the country are its numerous islands and atolls, as well as its cultural diversity. Sights include the ruined city of Nan Madol on Pohnpei, traditional stone money banks on Yap, and impressive coral reefs that invite diving and snorkeling.
