The Mediterranean country of Greece is geographically part of southeastern Europe and includes the Greek mainland, the Peloponnese peninsula and countless smaller and larger islands. Many of them are popular destinations for beach vacations. The mountainous part of the country is almost 80 percent. Ancient Greece once shaped the development of European civilization, as evidenced by the famous Acropolis. It is located in the country's capital Athens, which is known for many other historical buildings: the Agora, for example, the Tower of the Winds and the Odeon of Herodes Atticus.
