Grenada is an island nation in the Caribbean and is located at the southern end of the Grenadines island chain. The country consists of the island of Grenada itself, the smaller islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique, and some smaller islands north of the main island that belong to the Grenadines. Grenada, also called "Spice Island" because of its cultivation of nutmeg and mace, was first inhabited by native South Americans and later became a French and British colony. Grenada has been independent since 1974 and is now a parliamentary democracy. Attractions include beaches, national parks, and historic sites such as Fort George and the House of Chocolate.
