The Heard and McDonald Islands are an Australian outlying territory in the southern Indian Ocean, about two-thirds of the way from Madagascar to Antarctica. Made up of volcanic mountains, the archipelago was discovered in the mid-19th century and has been part of Australia since 1947. The islands are uninhabited and are considered one of the most remote places in the world. They are known for their active volcanoes, including Australia's highest mountain outside the continent, Mawson Peak. Since the islands can only be reached by boat, they are not accessible to tourists.
