Honduras is a Central American country bordered by Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala, with access to the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. The region was once inhabited by indigenous peoples such as the Maya and Lenca, and was later colonized by Spain. In 1821, Honduras gained independence from Spain. The country is known for its rich culture, scenic beauty with rainforests, beaches and archaeological sites such as Copán and Quiriguá. Honduras is also known for its coffee cultivation and handmade cigar production. Popular excursion destinations include Pico Bonito National Park and Tela Bay.
