Iceland is an island nation in the North Atlantic and geographically belongs to Europe. The settlement of the country by the Norse Vikings began in the 9th century. Iceland belonged to Denmark for a long time before gaining independence in 1944. Characteristic for the country are its breathtaking nature with glaciers, waterfalls, geysers and volcanic landscapes as well as the Icelandic language and culture. Among the most famous sights are the Thingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss Waterfalls and the Blue Lagoon.
