Iran is an authoritarian state in the Near East with a population of about 85 million. The capital and largest city is Tehran. Iran has the largest natural gas and the fourth largest oil reserves in the world and is thus an important supplier of fossil fuels. The country's history dates back to the 1st millennium BC. Among the most important sights are the ancient sites of Persepolis and Pasargadae, as well as the historic city centers of Isfahan and Shiraz.
