Kazakhstan is located in the center of Asia and in the east of Europe. It borders Russia, China, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan and has a coast on the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan was historically characterized by nomadic peoples and various empires and became part of the Russian Empire in the 19th century. After independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Astana became the capital and today the country is a democratic, secular republic with an authoritarian government and a thriving economy that depends mainly on oil and gas exports. Major attractions include the Altyn Emel National Park, Mount Khan Tengri, and the Baikonur Spaceport.
