Kiribati is an island nation in the Central Pacific Ocean, consisting of 33 coral atolls and spanning three island groups: the Gilbert Islands, the Phoenix Islands and the Line Islands. Kiribati is located south of Hawaii and north of Fiji. In 1979 Kiribati gained independence from Great Britain. The country is characterized by its remote location, rich I-Kiribati culture, and shallow coral atolls that are threatened by climate change. Attractions include the Phoenix Islands Protected Area, one of the largest marine protected areas in the world, the cultural heritage of Banaba Island, and the fascinating wildlife on the various atolls.
