Libya is a country in North Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea to the north and surrounded by Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Algeria and Tunisia. It is the fourth largest country in Africa and has a population of about 7 million people. Libya has a troubled history, ranging from ancient times through Ottoman rule and the Italian colonial period to the Gaddafi dictatorship and subsequent civil war. Libya's most famous sites include the ancient city of Leptis Magna, the rock carvings of Tadrart Acacus, and the ruins of Sabratha.
