Malawi is a landlocked country in southeastern Africa, crossed by the Great Rift Valley and Lake Malawi. The country has a rich wildlife and beaches in the Lake Malawi National Park and Cape Maclear. Malawi gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1964 and has a population of about 20.9 million. The capital is Lilongwe. The country's culture is characterized by traditional forms of music and dance, such as the Malipenga dance. Among the most important sights are the Mulanje Mountains, which are known as a trekking and climbing area.
