Mali is a landlocked country in West Africa with the capital Bamako. Most of the population lives in the south of the country, which is crossed by the Niger and Senegal rivers. The north extends deep into the Sahara and is sparsely populated. Mali was part of the French Sudan colony and became independent in 1960. The main economic sectors are agriculture, fishing and mining, with Mali being a major gold producer. The country's cultural importance is most evident in music, dance, literature and visual arts. Sights include the city of Timbuktu, the mosque of Djenné and the Boucle du Baoulé National Park.
