The Marshall Islands are an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, consisting of 29 atolls and over 1,000 islands, about halfway between Hawaii and Australia. They have been colonized by various nations throughout history, including Spain, Germany, Japan, and most recently the United States, before gaining independence in 1986. Characteristic of the country are the breathtaking nature, the shallow coral atolls and the rich marine fauna. Places of interest include Bikini Atoll, famous for diving opportunities, Alele Museum and Majuro Atoll.
