The Marshall Islands are an island nation in the Pacific Ocean, consisting of 29 atolls and over 1,000 islands, about halfway between Hawaii and Australia. They have been colonized by various nations throughout history, including Spain, Germany, Japan, and most recently the United States, before gaining independence in 1986.
