Martinique is a French Caribbean island south of Dominica and northwest of Saint Lucia. The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1493 and later occupied by France. It is an overseas territory of France and thus part of the European Union. The island is known for its picturesque beaches, crystal clear waters, rich culture, carnival and excellent cuisine that combines Creole and French influences. Sights include Mont Pelée, the Jardins de Balata and the historic capital Fort-de-France.
