Mauritius is an island nation in the Indian Ocean known for its beaches, lagoons and reefs. In the mountainous interior there is the Black River Gorges National Park with rainforests, waterfalls, hiking trails and wildlife. The capital, Port Louis, offers attractions such as the Champs de Mars horse racing track, the Eureka Colonial House, and the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden. Mauritius was initially a British colony and became independent in 1968. It is a member of the African Union and the Commonwealth of Nations.
