Monaco is a city-state on the Côte d'Azur and borders France to the north, east and west. With an area of 2.1 km², it is the second smallest sovereign country in the world and has about 38,000 inhabitants. Monaco's economy is heavily influenced by finance, tourism and gambling and is known as a tax haven. Monaco has a long history as an independent principality and has been ruled by the Grimaldi family since 1297.
