Monaco is a city-state on the Côte d'Azur and borders France to the north, east and west. With an area of 2.1 km², it is the second smallest sovereign country in the world and has about 38,000 inhabitants. Monaco's economy is heavily influenced by finance, tourism and gambling and is known as a tax haven. Monaco has a long history as an independent principality and has been ruled by the Grimaldi family since 1297. Major attractions include the Port of Monaco, the Oceanographic Museum, the Prince's Palace, Monaco Cathedral, and the famous Formula 1 race track.
