Mongolia is a landlocked country in East Asia, bordering Russia and China. The country has a troubled history, ranging from various nomadic empires to the founding of the Mongol Empire by Genghis Khan in 1206. After the rule of the Yuan Dynasty, the country was absorbed into the Qing Dynasty and later became a satellite state of the Soviet Union. Since 1990, Mongolia has been a democratic republic and has converted its economy to a market economy. Today, Mongolian culture is known for its nomads, horse breeding and Buddhist beliefs. The main attractions of the country are the Gobi Desert, Lake Khövsgöl and the Erdene Zuu Monastery.
