Montenegro is a country in southeastern Europe on the Adriatic Sea. It has a long history and was part of the Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Ottoman Empire and the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. After the disintegration of Yugoslavia, Montenegro declared its independence in 2006. The country is known for its stunning coastline, inland mountains and lakes, and medieval monasteries and fortresses. Among the most popular sights are Lake Scutari, the Bay of Kotor, Ostrog Monastery and the old town of Budva.
