Morocco is located in northwestern Africa, bordering the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. The country was ruled by various independent dynasties before falling under French and Spanish rule in the 1910s. In 1956, Morocco regained its independence and has since been a constitutional monarchy with an elected parliament. Morocco is known for its unique culture, a blend of Arab, Berber and European influences. The traditional cuisine is varied and famous for its spices and flavors. Major attractions include the historic cities of Fez and Marrakech, the coastal city of Casablanca, the Sahara Desert and the Atlas Mountains.
