Mozambique is a country in southeastern Africa with a long coastline on the Indian Ocean, with marine parks and popular beaches. The country borders Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, South Africa and Eswatini. Mozambique gained its independence from Portugal in 1975, but a subsequent civil war and the spread of IS since 2015 have made the country one of the poorest and most insecure in the region. Mozambique also has great economic potential, however, with oil fields discovered off the coast of Cabo Delgado province in the north. The country's attractions include the islands of the Bazaruto Archipelago, the Quirimbas Archipelago, and the historic ruins on Ibo Island.
