Myanmar, formerly Burma, is a country in Southeast Asia bordered by Thailand, Laos, China, India, Bangladesh and the Bay of Bengal. The country has a checkered history marked by various kingdoms and colonial rule. Since 1962, Myanmar has been under military rule, which continues to this day, except for a brief period from 2011 to 2021 when democratic elements and a civilian president were introduced as head of state. Myanmar has a rich culture and is known for its Buddhist temples and stupas, including the Shwedagon Pagoda in the capital Yangon and the temples of Bagan.
