Nauru is an island in the Central Pacific Ocean and the third smallest state in the world. The island was annexed by Germany in the late 19th century and was later under the administration of Australia, New Zealand and the United Kingdom. After World War II, Nauru was placed under United Nations trusteeship and gained independence in 1968. Since the beginning of the 20th century, phosphate has been mined on the island, causing severe environmental damage.
