Nepal is a landlocked country in South Asia, located mostly in the Himalayas. It borders Tibet to the north and India to the south, east and west. Nepal is a diverse state with a multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious society. The country's history dates back to the Vedic period of the Indian subcontinent. The region was an important junction on the Himalayan route of the Silk Road and developed its own culture and art. Nepal was never colonized, but served as a buffer state between Imperial China and British India. The country became a parliamentary democracy in 1951, was rocked by civil war in the 1990s and early 2000s, and has been a secular republic since 2008. The country's main tourist attractions are Mount Everest, Chitwan National Park and the Kathmandu Valley.
