New Caledonia is a group of islands in the South Pacific and belongs to France. The main island, Grand Terre, is surrounded by a large coral reef and offers palm-fringed beaches and a biodiverse lagoon. Nickel mining is an important source of income for the country. Popular activities include scuba diving, hiking and bird watching. Among the best-known sights are the Nouméa Botanical Garden, the ruins of Fort Téremba, and the Netcha stalactite cave.
