Norfolk Island is an Australian outlying territory in the Pacific Ocean between Australia and New Zealand. Originally inhabited by Polynesian settlers, the island was later used by Great Britain as a penal colony. After the abandonment of the penal colony, the island was settled by descendants of the Bounty mutineers. In 1914, the island was handed over to Australia by Great Britain and has been an outlying territory of Australia ever since. The evergreen Norfolk pine is the symbol of the island and an important export.
