The Kingdom of Norway belongs to the Scandinavian Peninsula and its landscape is mainly characterized by fjells (plateaus) and mountain massifs. More than 25 mountains are higher than 2300 meters. The many fjords, glaciers and inland lakes originate mainly from the ice age. The country has about 25,000 kilometers of Atlantic coastline and is surrounded by countless islands. It delights countless nature lovers, adventure vacationers, anglers and hikers every year. The country's capital Oslo used to be called Kristiania and is known for its picturesque "Gamlebyen" (Old Town), the fortress Akershus and the archaeological Viking ship finds. It is also home to the world-famous Holmenkollbakken ski jumping facility.
