Oman is an Arab country in Western Asia, stretching along the southeast coast of the Arabian Peninsula. It shares land borders with Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen, and has maritime borders with Iran and Pakistan. The capital of the country is Muscat. Oman was once an empire that competed with the Portuguese and British empires for influence in the Persian Gulf and Indian Ocean in the 17th century. Oman is the oldest continuously independent country in the Arab world and an absolute monarchy. It is a member of the United Nations, the Arab League, and the Gulf Cooperation Council. Oman has oil reserves and is a high income economy. Major attractions include the Grand Mosque in Muscat, Nakhal Fort, Bimmah Sinkhole, Wadi Shab and Salalah Gardens Mall.
