Romania is a country in southeastern Europe, stretching from the Carpathian Mountains to the Pannonian Plain and bordering Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine, and Moldova. The country's history dates back to the unification of the principalities of Moldova and Wallachia in 1859. Romania was part of the Warsaw Pact before moving politically closer to Western countries in 1989 and becoming a member of the European Union in 2007. Typical of the country are the traditional folklore, the picturesque villages and the famous monasteries in the Bukovina region. Other attractions include Peles Castle, the old town of Sighisoara and the Danube Delta, which has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
