Guide to Russia
The federal republic of Russia is located in northeastern Eurasia and covers over one-eighth of the world’s inhabited land mass. No state on earth has a larger area. In the vast country – except for the tropics – all climatic zones are represented. The country has produced important daughters and sons: the writers Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Lev Tolstoy, for example, but also the gifted ballet dancers Anna Pavlova and Natalya Romanovna Makarova. With 15 million inhabitants, Moscow, the capital of the country, is the largest city in Europe. The Kremlin and Red Square are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Saint Petersburg is home to the former main residence of the Russian tsars, the magnificent Winter Palace.
