St. Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha is a British overseas territory in the South Atlantic. It consists of the islands of St. Helena, Ascension and the Tristan da Cunha archipelago, including Gough Island. The islands were discovered by Portuguese navigators in the early 16th century and later colonized by the English Crown. St. Helena gained international fame due to Napoleon's exile. The archipelago served as an important base for the Allies during World War II and today hosts a military base and an important satellite communications station. Typical of the islands are the stunning scenery and wildlife, including the rare Aldabra giant tortoises. Attractions also include historic sites such as Napoleon House and James Fort on St. Helena, and the picturesque city of Edinburgh of the Seven Seas on Tristan da Cunha.
