Senegal is a state in West Africa bordered by Mauritania, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Mali and the Atlantic Ocean. The capital is Dakar. The country became independent in 1960 and is today one of the few democratic states in Africa. Characteristic of the country are its rich culture, music and art, its hospitality and its varied cuisine. Sights include Lac Rose, Gorée Island, the Saloum Delta and Djoudj National Park.
