Singapore is an island and city state in Southeast Asia. The country is located about one degree north of the equator and consists of one main island, 63 satellite islands and one outer island. Singapore was founded in 1819 by Stamford Raffles as a trading post of the British Empire and gained independence in 1965. Today, the country is a sophisticated, multicultural nation that is considered one of Asia's four tiger economies and is internationally known as a tax haven, commercial and financial center, and one of the world's most expensive cities. Major attractions include the Merlion, Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands.
