Sudan is located in northeastern Africa. It borders Chad, Egypt, Libya, Eritrea, Ethiopia, the Central African Republic and South Sudan. The country's history dates back to Pharaonic times and includes the rule of the Egyptian New Kingdoms and the rise of the Kingdom of Kush. In the 19th century, Sudan was conquered by Egypt and eventually ruled by the British before gaining independence in 1956. The country's main attractions include the Dinder National Park, the Nubian Museum and the pyramids of Meroe.
